- All Living things are made of one or
more cells.
- Cells are the basic units of structure
and function of Organisms.
- All cells arise from existing cells.
Cells need to be small to allow needed
materials to easily and quickly pass from one to another. This can
only be accomplished by a small surface area.
Prokaryote are the smallest and simplest
single cell organisms containing no nucleus or other internal compartments. These cells are more commonly known to
us as bacteria and carry out very specialized functions.
FIG I
Many bacteria cells can reproduce very quickly.
This is because all the enzymes and ribosomes move about freely in the
cytoplasm due to the fact that the bacteria cell has no nucleus.
The eukaryote cell is simply an organism in
which the cells have a nucleus. The nucleus holds a cells DNA.
These types of cells also have other internal elements. |

FIG I
Cells share common
structural features including the outer surface called the Cell Membrane.
This membrane contains the cell and separates the cell interior called the
cytoplasm. All cells have ribosomes which are the cellular
structures on which protein is made. DNA is also contained in all
cells. The
organelle which is a structure which helps the cell performs its function.
These cells also have Cilia or flagella which are hair like structures
that structures that can serve one of a couple functions: 1-To propel the
cell about from place to place or 2-to move substances across the
structure of the cell.
The cytoplasm contains everything within the
cell with the exception of the nucleus. The cytoskeleton is composed
of webs of protein fibers which serve the function of giving the cell its
shape.
