Tips for Getting Better Math Grades

Tips for Better Grades in Math
by Dr. Kempton Smith

Pass these on to your high school math student:

1. Take notes from lectures, writing them neatly. When you study them, check points you need to review. As you read your textbook, make check marks beside those points you don't know
and then review those points.

2. For math classes, it is important to read over the material in your text book. Don't just focus on your homework problems.

3. If you don't understand something, ask your teacher as soon as you can.

4. When doing your math homework, be neat. It does make a difference.

5. Make up flash cards. Use your waiting time. You can study them while waiting for rides, friends, and appointments.

6. Watch for summaries within and at the end of assigned chapters.

7. Look for bold face and italic copy. They signify important points to remember.

8. Be able to answer all the questions throughout the passages and all the questions at the ends of chapters.

9. Study in short spurts. Your mind needs intervals between absorbing materials. Long term memory occurs when learned in intervals.

10. Before a test, warm up. Scrunch up your body and then relax.  Smile. You can't be tense when you sit up straight and smile.

11. Think back to a good learning experience you had: when you learned to swim or made your first home run.

12. Practice doing well. Tell yourself that you have done all you can (if you have) and so you will do well on the tests.

13. Don't just aim for a 70% on your test. Aim high and shoot for 100%.

14. Most of all, repeat positive affirmations. "I can do it.  I can get a great grade."
