Our environment is constantly in danger. Man pollutes the air, water, and soil with dangerous chemicals. In this section we are going to take a look at pollution and its impact on our environment. We will also be examining ways we all can help clean up the environment and keep it clean. We begin below with the topic of Air Pollution.

Air Pollution-

The website we are going to visit is the kids section of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Website called Air Quality Index for Kids. Go to the website by clicking the underlined words above. Once you get there click the topic Clean Air and Dirty Air. Read the entire section. You are looking for the answers to the following questions:
What is the purpose of the E.P.A?
Can you always see pollution?
What is ozone? How is bad ozone formed? (Be sure to watch or read the cartoon strip on this topic)
How does breathing ozone affect your lungs?
What does the term particulate matter refer to?
What affect does particulate matter have on air quality?
Describe some of the affects of breathing particulate matter. (at least 3)
Name one way you can avoid particulate matter.
Now click on the section called AQI The letters stand for Air Quality Index. In this section you will learn how to read and understand the index. You are looking for the answers to the following questions.
What three things does the E.P.A use to tell people about the air quality?
What does it mean if it is a purple day? Green?
What time of year is air quality at its worst?
If the A.Q.I index was at number 250, what would that mean? What if it was 125?
Find out the air quality in your area today. You'll only know how to find this if you read the entire section! I live in California so I clicked California and then found the area in which I live. As you can see our air quality isn't very good. How's the air quality in your town or city?

OZONE
Health message : Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should avoid prolonged outdoor exertion; everyone else, especially children, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
You can look at other types of representation of the air quality in this section. There are animated maps, air quality forecasts, and ozone maps.
Where else besides the computer can you find the Air Quality Index?

The next section we will be reading is Air Quality and Health
AQI Colors
Health Word(s) and What to do!
Copy the chart above filling in the name of the colors and the corresponding Heath Word or words including what you should do if the air quality is that color.
What does it mean by those in a sensitive group? Are you part of the sensitive group? why?
How might you feel after playing hard outside on a smoggy day?
Is it okay to play outside when pollution levels are orange and red? What should you do if you chest feels tights and it becomes difficult to breathe?
How can you lower you risk of ingesting air pollution?
You can help reduce pollution by walking or riding your bike. You can also encourage your parents to keep their cars well tuned. Not making unnecessary trips also helps.
Now go play some games using what you've learned! http://www.epa.gov/airnow/aqikids/games.html
