This week 1-17-2010 we are learning the story of Jesus Baptism by John the Baptist.
There was a man named John the Baptist, a cousin of Jesus, who lived in the wilderness. He worn clothes made from camel’s hair. He ate locusts and wild honey. John told the people about God. He also told them a special man was coming very soon. This man was Jesus, the son of God.
John preached to the people telling them to stop doing bad things and start doing good things. People who decided to do good things were baptized in the Jordan River. Being baptized was dipping a person quickly in the water and baptism them in the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. Getting baptized was a sign to all that one wanted to follow God.
One day Jesus came to the river and asked John to baptize him. At first John refused saying that Jesus was the great one and that Jesus should be baptizing John. However, Jesus said no. He wanted John to baptize him. This John did.
As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, the spirit of God came down in the form of a dove. It landed on Jesus and God said “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased.”
